CDIO (C-Conceive; D-Design; I-Implement; O-Operate) is a solution to improve the quality of training to meet the implementation needs of society based on the defined output standard (CĐR) to design the program and training methods in a scientific process. Building the training programs under the CDIO approach aims to train the students in both comprehensive developments of knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities. The nature and characteristics of CDIO process approach is the approach to development based on outputs and direction on resolving the two central questions: What are the knowledge, skills and attitudes that the graduated students need to gain? What should we do for the graduated students to gain those knowledge, skills and attitudes? According to two main problems, the lecturers are required to build their teaching programs satisfy two big questions: What do they teach? How do they teach?
The academic year 2014-2015, the University of Thu Dau Mot has developed the training program under the CDIO sync for all groups of segment. The school leadership always cared and made conditions for the lecturers of The University of Thu Dau Mot to update knowledge and useful information about the new solutions, contributing to build the training program to meet the needs of high quality training, adapted to the reality of the labor market. The school determined to organize many training courses for the leaders, lecturers, as well as the other officers, who served in the training followed the CDIO approach methodically because the lectures also need to study and be trained on the CDIO seriously to transmit the standard output in the best way under the proposed frame of the program.
After almost a semester of deployment, from the experience of conclusion, the CDIO of the school is more and more improved. The application of model training program for CDIO: information technology (IT), electronics, architectural-urban, environment, law, social works, economics; are rushing to be made and have achieved some positive results on the first step. This is the true evidence for the proper direction of the school in the selection of solutions to improve the quality of training. Next time, the school will continue to apply this model to the construction of the training program in the remaining groups of segment, depend on the characteristics of each specialization to develop comprehensively of necessary knowledge, skills, qualities and competencies for the students.
We had an exchanged about the public concerns when people thought that the CDIO is the training of specialized engineering techniques, so the deployment of applying for the whole segments included the social sciences, was it insufficient?.
Dr. Ngo Hong Diep–Head of the Training Department of the University of Thu Dau Mot affirmed: "In essence, we need to say that the CDIO is a solution to improve the quality of training to meet the needs of society on the basis of the output standard to design the program content and the training plans. For the University of Thu Dau Mot, we use CDIO approach but we do not use the whole CDIO model to build, develop and organize the training program. The first approach is meant to be about the overall approach that means it derives from the root power of the segment, from which we can build and organize the training program. Secondly, CDIO is an open model, which offers the specific instructions about the lifecycles and the particular build instructions, organization and evaluation of training programs and this process brings high public figures to apply for many different segments, so it absolutely is able to adapt to the training programs of engineering, economy and society. The fact proves that we are using this approach and we are having several important steps in the development, organization and evaluation of training program in a right way.
Determination for deployment to carry out according to the methodical itinerary:
Review on the macro range, the applying of the CDIO approach will contribute to resolve the problem of "quality education" today. The realities of the universities in developed and developing countries have demonstrated the application of methods or CDIO approach will add to the needs of employers. Therefore, it can help to shorten the distance between the training in schools and the requirements of the employers, who use the human resources; it also helps the learners develop comprehensively, adapt to the changing work environment quickly and even lead the way in this changing.
At the beginning, the school advocated the construction program under the CDIO approach must be methodical from the preparation. Based on learning experiences from the patterns, we have to design the suitable programs for the conditions in Vietnam and it must put in the context of economic and social/business of Binh Duong, the South East region and Vietnam. On the other hand, the increasing integration with the world also requires that we also need to catch the rhythm and have some common things with the world. Each of the subjects in the training program will contribute a certain part in the achieving the output standard of the program, which is built as the CDIO approach. This requires every lecturer must follow the official standards of the program and have the commitments about the transmission of the output standards in subjects that they undertake. These output standards are published at the end of the subjects and they will be evaluated by the students and other related people.
The largest and most important advantage of The University of Thu Dau Mot is the pioneer and the vision of the leaders. Due to this high determination in deployment in the block of segments as well as the determination in learning from the experiences of researches, deployments and the applying of CDIO approach in other pioneered schools is a big step for our fledgling University. At this moment, in the awareness of the CDIO initiatives have created the consensus and the enthusiastic response of all the lecturers, leaders, managers, experts and students in the process of implementation.
Dr.Nguyen Van Hiep - Rector of The University of Thu Dau Mot - Head of the building project CDIO program, stressed: "The application of CDIO approach requires basic conditions in terms of facilities, the infrastructure of schools, lecturers, staffs to meet the standards of the CDIO and we must have a consistent system of disposal process to ensure the success of the program. However, we define that the first prerequisite is the enthusiasm, allocate the human resources appropriately towards the innovation of the framework training program (which can include the changing of all the compulsory subjects are prescribed at present) when we apply the CDIO approach. We do not attach much importance to the difficult problems or the challenges, we think it is the way we systematize the works, which were done by the traditional teaching before. When we defined like that, we would not think it is too difficult, stressed or depended more on the finance…”
The international experiences showed that we would need four years to implement a training program (when the students began the school term until they graduated from school), then we had to need two years to be able to evaluate the results of these students when they got out of school and worked in an organization. Therefore, we needs from 5-7 years to assess the effect of the program. This is not a very long time in the field of the university education and training.
The deployment of the CDIO model of The University of Thu Dau Mot is still in the initial stage. In addition, if we want to evaluate the effect of the program, we need more time but in a short term, this program gave the lecturers, especially the young lecturers as The University of Thu Dau Mot the elation, desire to experiment, learn and apply in accordance with the actual situations.
