Half a Century of Cultivating Tradition and Building the Foundation for Development
The year 2026 marks a special milestone in the developmental history of Thu Dau Mot University. Half a century ago, starting from the first teacher training classes formed in the Song Be region after the country's reunification, a resilient journey of cultivating knowledge and training local human resources began. Through various development stages under different names, that tradition has been inherited and fostered to become the foundation for the formation and development of today's Thu Dau Mot University.
On June 24, 2026, Thu Dau Mot University solemnly organized the Celebration of its 50 Years of Heritage (1976–2026) and 17th Anniversary of Establishment (June 24, 2009–June 24, 2026). This is an opportunity to reflect on the University's journey of construction and development, and to express gratitude to generations of officials, lecturers, staff, employees, and learners who have contributed to creating its traditional values. It is also a moment to affirm the determination to continue innovating and enhancing the quality of training, scientific research, international cooperation, and community service in the new development phase.
The ceremony was attended by Mr. Huynh Thanh Nhan – Member of the City Party Committee and Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council; Mr. Nguyen Van Loi - Former Member of the Party Central Committee, Former Secretary of the Binh Duong Provincial Party Committee, and Former Head of the Ho Chi Minh City National Assembly Delegation; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Hiep - Former Secretary of the Party Committee, Former Chairman of the University Council, and Former Rector of Thu Dau Mot University; Mr. Nguyen Hoang Son - Former Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Former Chairman of the Binh Duong Provincial People's Committee; and Mr. Nguyen Hoang Thao - Former Standing Deputy Secretary of the Binh Duong Provincial Party Committee. Also in attendance were leaders of various departments, boards, and agencies; former leaders of Binh Duong province and Ho Chi Minh City across different periods; representatives of domestic and foreign agencies, enterprises, and partners; along with generations of officials, lecturers, staff, employees, alumni, and numerous current students of the university.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Doan Ngoc Xuan - Rector of Thu Dau Mot University, shared that the university's 50-year journey originated from the Ho Chi Minh City Teacher Training College - Campus 5, which later became Song Be Teacher Training College and Binh Duong Teacher Training College. Despite many difficulties regarding facilities, teaching staff, and resources, generations of officials and lecturers persistently carried out the mission of training teachers, contributing to building human resources for the local area and many provinces and cities nationwide. That tradition became the foundation for the university to continue developing in subsequent stages.
Along with the country's renovation process and the strong development of Binh Duong province, the demand for training high-quality human resources became increasingly urgent. Building upon this foundation, on June 24, 2009, the Prime Minister decided to establish Thu Dau Mot University by upgrading Binh Duong Teacher Training College. This was a crucial turning point, transforming the institution from a pedagogical training facility into a multi-disciplinary and multi-field university, meeting the socio-economic development requirements of the former Binh Duong province, the Southeast region, and the whole country.
The transition of the training model posed many new requirements regarding organizational structure, workforce, facilities, and university governance. In that context, the collective leadership, lecturers, staff, and employees of the University promoted a spirit of solidarity, actively innovated, and gradually perfected the governance model, developed the staff, expanded training disciplines, and strengthened cooperation with domestic and foreign universities and research institutes. According to Dr. Doan Ngoc Xuan, it was the consensus of the University's collective and the attention of the Central Government and local authorities across different periods that created the foundation for Thu Dau Mot University to gradually build its reputation within the Vietnamese higher education system.
After 17 years of development, Thu Dau Mot University has achieved many important results in the fields of training, scientific research, international cooperation, and community service. The university has gradually perfected a modern governance model, effectively implementing university and financial autonomy mechanisms, creating momentum for innovation and sustainable development. To date, the University offers 50 majors across various fields with a scale of over 23,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students; many training programs have been accredited and have met domestic and regional quality standards, better satisfying society's human resource needs.
Training activities have been innovated to be more closely linked with practice, enhancing professional experience, developing professional competence, and improving learners' adaptability to the requirements of digital transformation and international integration. Alongside this, scientific research has gradually become an important driving force in the University's development strategy. The number of international publications has increased year by year; many research topics and projects have been implemented in alignment with the needs of localities and enterprises, contributing to bringing research results into practice. Specialized research groups have been formed, creating a premise for innovation and technology transfer activities.
International cooperation continues to be expanded with many prestigious universities, research institutes, and educational organizations worldwide. Through collaborative programs in training, academic exchange, scientific research, and human resource development, Thu Dau Mot University has steadily improved training quality, expanded the academic environment, and enhanced international integration. Maintaining its position in domestic and international university rankings is the result of a persistent development process and simultaneously affirms the university's increasingly elevated prestige.
“Looking back on the 50-year journey of tradition and 17 years of building the university, Thu Dau Mot University has made a powerful transformation from a teacher training institution into a multidisciplinary university, step by step affirming its role in human resource training, scientific research, technology transfer, and community service. These achieved results are a continuation of the accomplishments of many preceding generations, while also creating a foundation for the University to continue developing, positively contributing to the cause of education, science, and technology, and meeting the development requirements of Ho Chi Minh City and the country in the new era,” affirmed Dr. Doan Ngoc Xuan.
Continuing the Tradition and Affirming the Mission in the New Development Phase
Entering the new development phase, Thu Dau Mot University faces higher requirements in human resource training, scientific research, and innovation, in order to meet the development orientation of Ho Chi Minh City after expanding its development space. This was also the core focus emphasized by the City leaders at the 50 Years of Heritage and 17th Anniversary of Establishment ceremony.
Promoting its 50-year tradition and the achievements gained after 17 years as a university, Thu Dau Mot University is determined to continue comprehensive innovation, utilizing training quality, scientific research, and innovation as driving forces for development in the new phase. Sharing about the future development orientation, Dr. Doan Ngoc Xuan – Rector, stated that the university aims to continue comprehensive innovation across all fields, focusing on training quality, scientific research, and innovation as development drivers. The focus is on perfecting a modern university governance model; improving staff quality; developing regional and international standard training programs; and promoting scientific research, technology transfer, and expanding cooperation with enterprises, universities, and research institutes at home and abroad. “Along with improving training quality, the university will continue to promote its role as a center of knowledge, innovation, and community service; proactively participating in solving practical local issues through research, consulting, technology transfer, and human resource development activities. This is also a consistent orientation to enhance the university's competitiveness, making practical contributions to the socio-economic development of Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast region in the new phase,” Dr. Doan Ngoc Xuan emphasized.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Huynh Thanh Nhan – Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, acknowledged and commended the results Thu Dau Mot University has achieved throughout its 50 years of construction and development. From a former teacher training institution of Song Be province, the university has gradually developed into a multidisciplinary higher education institution, making many contributions to human resource training, scientific research, international cooperation, and community service, playing an important role in the development of the former Binh Duong province and now Ho Chi Minh City.
In the context of Ho Chi Minh City expanding its development space and aiming to become an economic, financial, scientific, technological, and innovation center of the region, Mr. Huynh Thanh Nhan emphasized the increasingly high requirements for the higher education system. Accordingly, universities must not only fulfill the mission of training human resources but also need to promote their role as centers of research, innovation, and knowledge transfer. They must strengthen connections with the government, enterprises, and research institutes to participate in solving practical problems, contributing to improving competitiveness and creating momentum for the fast and sustainable development of the City.
Facing the newly set requirements, Mr. Huynh Thanh Nhan suggested that Thu Dau Mot University continue to promote its 50-year tradition, build an innovative university model, and use training and scientific research quality as a foundation for development. He recommended focusing investments on strategic fields such as artificial intelligence, semiconductor industry, big data, digital technology, and key engineering disciplines. Simultaneously, he advised promoting cooperation with enterprises, research institutes, and universities domestically and internationally; developing an innovation ecosystem, and linking training with research, technology transfer, and the practical needs of the labor market. Furthermore, the university needs to continue building a modern and humane educational environment; promote its identity and traditional values fostered through many generations; and synchronously invest in facilities, enhance university governance capacity, and develop the teaching staff to meet the fast and sustainable development requirements of Ho Chi Minh City in the new phase.
Within the framework of the ceremony, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee awarded the Commemorative Flag to Thu Dau Mot University, acknowledging the University's contributions to the cause of education and training, human resource development, scientific research, and serving local socio-economic development across different periods. The award is a recognition of the achievements attained and simultaneously demonstrates the City's trust and expectations regarding the university's role and responsibility in its upcoming development journey.
On this occasion, many collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in the process of building and developing Thu Dau Mot University were also commended and rewarded. These awards are a recognition of the persistent contributions of many generations of officials, lecturers, staff, and employees who have jointly cultivated the tradition, creating a foundation for the university to continue developing and asserting its position as a prestigious public higher education institution, accompanying the development of Ho Chi Minh City and the country.
